Berkshire Lyric Chorus
The Berkshire Lyric Chorus begins rehearsals for the spring semester of our 2019-2020 season at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13 at the Pittsfield Unitarian Church on Wendell Avenue and Broad Street. Interested new singers are admitted by auditions that will be held on Saturday mornings January 4 in Stockbridge and January 11 in Pittsfield. Alternate times and places might be arranged. Bring a simple song in any language. An accompanist will be provided.
On March 21 and 22, we present our annual Kick the Winter Blues concert, this year with a popular Irish theme The Spring Masterworks concert takes place on Memorial Day weekend at Tanglewood’s Seiji Ozawa Hall. The 100 voice chorus will perform the Bruckner Te Deum, Brahms Schicksalslied, Brahms Alto Rhapsody accompanied by an orchestra. This follows recent spring concerts at Ozawa Hall of the Mozart Requiem , the Beethoven Mass in C, the Haydn Creation and most recently the Schubert's Mass in G and Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna..
The Berkshire Lyric Chorus is one of a family of choruses comprising Berkshire Lyric, whose goal is to lead singers to a world of beauty through the choral art and a wide range of great music. Lyric’s recent Christmas concert at St. Mark’s Church in Pittsfield was recorded for broadcast on WMHT-FM 89.1. The organization has also been honored with a recent Alfred Nash Patterson Grant from Choral Arts New England for educational excellence. The Berkshire Lyric Chorus is led by Artistic Director Jack Brown, who also directs Lyric’s Blafield Children’s Chorus and Melodious Accord. He is on the music faculty at Simon’s Rock College in Great Barrington and at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville. Ct. Berkshire Lyric was founded by Robert Blafield in 1963.
The Blafield Children’s Chorus
The Blafield Children’s Chorus begins rehearsals for their fall season at 10 a.m. on Saturday January 11 at the Pittsfield Unitarian Church. The church is located at the corner of Wendell and Broad in Pittsfield. The chorus is open to all children ages 6-14 from Berkshire County and surrounding areas. The main Blafield Children’s Chorus is an auditioned chorus comprised of boys and girls in fourth through ninth grade. New singers should come to the first rehearsal and be prepared to stay afterwards for some very simple group evaluation of the ability to match a pitch and sing back simple music. During their weekly 90 minute rehearsal, the choristers receive intensive musical and vocal training. There is also a start-up chorus for all interested boys and girls, first through fourth grade. There is no audition for the start-up chorus. This group meets Saturday mornings at 10 am for a lively one-hour session. Rehearsals are designed to teach basic musical and performance skills.
The Blafield Children’s Chorus is one of a family of choruses comprising Berkshire Lyric, whose goal is to lead talented young singers into a world of great music, while learning how to sing well and have fun. It is led by Berkshire Lyric Artistic Director Jack Brown. who also directs the 90 voice Berkshire Lyric Chorus and is on the faculty at Simon’s Rock College and at The Hotchkiss School. Berkshire Lyric was founded by Robert Blafield in 1963 and their children’s chorus is named in his honor.
The Blafield Children's Chorus will be featured in Berkshire Lyric’s annual Kick the Winter Blues popular concerts in Lenox on March 21 and 22, this year with an ever-popular Irish theme. Their own Young Musicians Concert takes place on May 17. They conclude the season on Sunday May 24, Memorial Day weekend, sharing a concert with the Berkshire Lyric Chorus at Tanglewood’s Seiji Ozawa Hall.
